This way to everything K100...... | |
Hello members, Here is the first phase of our magazine article collection. David and myself have spent long hours searching publications of the period for any K100C features, articles and advertisements - and even more time to document, scan and organize for everyone - there is lots more to come. Stayed tuned ! Paul.
hi Paul and David, thank`s for all the work you put into this site,it is great to read road test`s from 1977 when the truck was new. john
wow. i had a book long time ago was sold.
The Bicentennial article, and pictures are excellent! Thank you for uploading!
Hi all, Just posted - 1977 Owner Operator KW ad. Sent to us by member Johnnytrucker (thanks Johnny). I'd never seen this ad before and photos showing the cab tilted in ads is a rarity. This paint scheme (called Vanguard) was pushed really hard in their advertising for '77. A body guy at the what was J.T. Jenkins dealership in Los Angeles at the time told me they were trying to modernize the image and thought Salem was too old and traditional looking as it had been around since the 1950's in its basic form, first appearing on the bull nose trucks.. Thanks to the BJ and the Bear TV series which first hit screens the following year, Salem was back in the #1 slot as the most requested and ordered paint scheme. Paul.
That's a cool add, I haven't seen it before, thanks for posting.
What a fantastic add, i really enjoyed that one.
78kw wrote on Mar 21, '09 Thank you for taking the time and effort to find these. I enjoy the old ads and brochures.
Great ads! I too must admit I've never seen these before. Thanks for posting and for the info on the salem paint scheme.
| Just posted ! 1974 Overdrive Tractor of the month.
This snappy-looking husband and wife team stand proudly next to their pride and joy - love these period images. The trucks are away from the safety of the dealership and now out on the road earning their living. We have several of these Tractor of the month features showing K100s coming in the future.
Thanks for your comments, much appreciated. If you have any interesting features, articles or ads, please let me know and I can check if we have it in the 'Yet to post' file or add it and credit you of course when it's posted. You can e-mail .jpg or .pdf files directly to me at pjc56@earthlink.net.
Thanks everyone. Paul. |
Just posted ! 1981 Overdrive photo feature. Certainly not sure about the paint scheme or the choice of bed sheets, but great detail shots.....girls aside of course.....What with my current roof installation project, I'm way too familiar than I should be on the tolerances of a how the roof caps fit - note the 3/8" gap between the side skin and the roof on the passenger side rear corner. Paul.
78kw wrote on Apr 25, '09 I love it. Especially the paint scheme.
That is great ! i do some plastic model kit and these brochures are a goldmine for me ! I'm gonna begin a amt kenworth k-123 shortly ! great stuff you got there ! thank you very very much ! in a friendly way ! Fred
Hi fred40g, Happy you found this useful - it is a great resource as a restoration reference and for model builders such as yourself for paint schemes. Good luck with your projects ! Paul.
this looks like an aero inter. but they didnt come out till 1976.was this a prototype?
Hi 76k100, This is actually the W900 interior - you can see the inner roof plastic liner in the corner. I kept the W picture in this article as the text included K100 information. Paul.
Hi everyone, Just added......1978 K100 VIT 'Sugar Shack' Poster I know as a kid my bedroom walls were covered with this series of posters put out by Power Graphics Corp....how about you ? I'll be adding more from this series of posters soon. Paul.
Just posted ! 1977 K100 VIT Poster Another poster from the classic 1970's series of trucking posters put out by Power Graphics Corp. Not sure about the radiator filler strip or the white air cleaner, battery box and 1/4 fender flaps, but still a great picture. Paul.
that sure is a sweet truck. I would love to find those posters.
I have the W900 with the same trailer and the colors were the same. They called it Bandit, I think. Mine's a wooden framed picture, but it's the Power Graphics photo.
Just posted ! 1981 BJ & The Bear Poster - the infamous 'Quarry' picture (complete with silver duct tape over the roof vent). Yep, here it is....the one truck that made most of us love the Aerodyne ! This 3rd and final season truck from the TV series that at its peak had 11 million viewers per week is yet another poster from the classic series of trucking posters put out by Power Graphics Corp. Despite it's popularity, the last show aired in May 1981 never to return because of a television and film writers strike that prevented any further episodes being produced. This actual truck is now owned by Paul Sagehorn in Sparta, WI and has been fully restored by him and his father. Be sure to check out Paul Sagehorn's site at: tvtruckin.com for the restoration before and after pictures. Paul.
I have a copy of that poster, hanging in my model room in my house!
I also have this. Is there anymore bj rig posters out there? This is the only one i've seen

Just added ! 1978 UK 'Truck' Magazine article featuring the K100 that moves the Space Shuttle around. Here's a cute little day cab, older single headlight K100, they do look odd without the factory sun visor.....but that's one big 'ole payload to drag around. Paul.
Just Posted ! 1980 UK 'Truck' Magazine Article. This details the first Kenworth dealer in the UK....I remember this very well. The moment I heard of this I jumped on a train from my hometown of London and headed north to check this place out . This dealer was located in the middle of nowhere in a tiny little village....and they had gone home early. So, not to be deterred, my friend and I fed some snacks to the guard dog and hopped over the fence only to be confronted by a row of '86 Salem Aerodynes and a couple of '86 flat tops. We had indeed arrived in heaven...plus one of the Aero's was unlocked. Sorry to the owners and any former employees of Dando's Motor Services of Chipping Sodbury, we were very respectful to your premises, vehicles and the dog was not harmed in any way, just a little fatter maybe by the time we were done. I will find the pictures from that glorious day and upload them in the future. Paul.
TOP JOB PAUL,DAVE. REALLY LIKE IT CHEERS
Thanks macgus, Much appreciated ! Paul.
Just added ! ....A KW advertisement featuring the K100 published in 1981. It's a shame how much of that paint job was covered-up by the regs & permits. I'm a big fan of metallic silver and you didn't see that many in ads. Paul.
That's awesome Paul, thanks for adding it to the collection.
I wish I could find a truck like that hidden away in a barn somewhere...I'd write a check or run to the bank to pay cash on the spot!!!
does anyone know where i can find any more of these truck um up posters?the last one i found was on ebay it was super star the pete in mint condition
| Thanks k100aerodyne, There's plenty more where that came from....
Hello wings2wheels, It is amazing how many of these were built during the golden period and how relatively few there are around now. Anyone have any barn-finds they need to tell us about ?
Hi kenworthkerry, You've already found the best source - E-bay is our friend. They do come up every once and a while.....keep looking ! Thanks, Paul. |
| Just posted ! I really like these KW ads - here's another one from 1977....what a sweet couple with their pride and joy K100. It is interesting that even though KW were Paccar's most expensive and top of the line truck product, the advertising and associated photographs were never that fantastic, certainly not on the same level as the Peterbilt photo shoots or even the Freightliner ads that used indoor studio photographs. Oh well, that's why we have the real trucks sitting on our driveways to look at..... grab a beer, pull up a chair and stare to our hearts content....who needs advertisements ? Paul.

78kw wrote on Sep 24, '10 Man is that Sharp! I love the paintjob and the eagle on the wind fairing. You are right, though. All those ICC #s did cover up paintjobs back then. Especially when they're on a solid color background like in the pic.
78kw wrote on Sep 24, '10 I like these real world settings. Some advertising photos are really specttacular, but they look like they're taken nowhere near a highway where the truck would actually travel.
thanks paul for the response about the power graphic posters. i did have one question about the sugar shack poster. the one i had when i was younger, had more of a side profile view.and the one on this site shows more of the frontal view whats up with that? i still have two of the original power graphic pamplets that came with the amt kits.it just threw me for a loop.this web site is awesome keep up the good work.and keep the pics coming.hoping to find my "barn yard find"soon.kerry
Hi there Kerry, I don't know the total number of K100 posters that Power Graphics put out, I would be happy to see more than just the 3 I am aware of....also I would be curious to see the pamphlets that you have......if you get a chance to scan and e-mail them to me, I can maybe include it in the album here. My e-mail address is: pjc56 @earthlink.net. Pleased that you like the site too ! Best regards, Paul.
Just added - KW Dealer Ad from 1981 Aside of the factory released adverts, I really like the individual KW dealer ads that that were published throughout the years. I have many to bring you though here's a sampler for you. A happy family photo indeed - then all he had to do was pay for his K100.... Paul.
Thats a nice truck ,v8 cat would be rare .
typical uk spec 1 exhaust 1 air horn and 3 maker lights missing and steering wheel on the wrong side !!!! great photo Paul ,where these the one`s sold by dandos ?is the front axel set back too.
Just added - 1979 Bridgestone Tires Ad ! Nice shot of a K100 Aerodyne...even with the wheels off..... I've accumulated a number of original equipment manufacturers ads that feature K100s and plan to add them in the near future. Enjoy. Paul.
Just posted - 1966 K100 'Wrecker of the Month' Featured in a 1981 issue of Overdrive magazine, here's a sweet looking KW. It can be difficult to find good images of the earlier K100's, nice that this company converted this one to a wrecker and put it to good use. Paul.
I have a old OO book with a Pete cabover pullin the enterprise and it's got a V12 Detroit in it.It has the same paint schem as this K100.I wonder if this K100 has a V12 Detroit in it?
Having an 8" breather stack on this old of a truck id say it has.
Im having trouble reading the engine and HP rating.Sombody help me on this.
Love to have one of these!!
I like this.Yea, don't I know how rare that V8 Cat is!
Just added - 1977 KW Ad ! Another nice picture, I think KW were smart to show trucks in their ads that had already been out on the road, bugs and all..... Paul.
| I don't think that truck was spec'd very well. Sounds like he pulled light loads, so a 3408 would be overkill, plus not a great match with a 15 speed transmission, and 3.90 rears. Just my opinion.
Anyway, cool ad. Thanks for posting it Paul. |
I love it. What a gorgeous truck,
I had this poster and the one that 78kw uses as an avitar when I was a kid.
"What eats bananas, weighs 10 tons and is viewed by 11 million people each week ?" Hmmmm, maybe the main reason most of us got into the K100 Aerodyne....... Not that I normally feature models of our favourite truck (I always prefer working with a 1:1 scale), a friend of mine is an avid Matchbox collector and found this in his latest box of E-bay goodies....thought I would share this with you. Paul.
That was my favorite show as a kid.
Just added - 1980 New Jersey KW Dealership Ad. I love original dealer ads, this is one of several I'll be adding in the future. I'm always on the look out for original J.T. Jenkins ads....anyone got one hiding in their sleeper ? Paul.
78kw wrote on Jul 17, '11 This caught my attention because I'm building a model of a K121 right now. I never got to watch the show, but I always thought it was a great looking truck. The model kit, however, is very inaccurate from what I understand in comparison to the show. I know AMT's Movin' On KW was very inaccurate.
| Just Added - Fox Radar ad from 1980 ! Before computer special effects & digital image insertion if you wanted a fox in a K100 Aerodyne, you physically placed a fox a K100 Aerodyne. Despite having the 'Kenworth' nameplate blacked out, it's a great shot of the truck...look at that bumper, nothing like a brand new factory gullwing bumper...it certainly doesn't wobble around in the wind like the stainless Texas slabs of later years......... Paul.
|
Fancy a free Aerodyne ? Whilst looking through a recently acquired pile of Overdrive Magazines I found these...... I had heard that one of the BJ rigs was given away back in the day though here's the only proof I've ever seen. Paul.
Wow, I got that poster years ago when I was a kid & they'd just came out, & still have it stashed away somewhere too! I'll have to go hunting & dig it out. I just found this site today, cool as!

Just Posted - Overdrive Tractor Dissection Report of a 1972 K125. I'm always happy to find test reports from back in the day and this is no exception, great photos and continuation of Overdrive's pet hate with cigarette lighter placements ! Nice to have more period detailed photographs and accounts of when these things were new. Paul.
....It's got J.T. Jenkins & Co dealer badges on it too... Paul.
